Crichton Church. The Crichton

Dumfries has the fantastic, world-class, Victorian, Crichton buildings and gardens at Bankend Rd.


Formerly this was one of the biggest mental institutions in the world - world famous and set up by a rich philanthropist; now it is university buildings, a decent hotel, museum, gardens, and a smaller mental institution.

The Crichton, the grandest of Scotland's royal asylums, was founded in Dumfries in 1838 by Elizabeth Crichton.

Many top people, including lords and Royals, have been patients at the Crichton.

I've told my girlfriend no more foreign holidays, not for a while anyway. Next year it's Dumfries, coz it looks beautiful. And I miss British pubs and real ale. The lager I drunk in Italy this year was tasteless.
